About us
The Szalmavirág Guesthouse is located in Northern Hungary at the foot of the Bükk Mountains, in the picturesque village of Szilvásvárad. We welcome you with a quiet, peaceful environment and the authentic atmosphere of the countryside.
Our story
We opened our guesthouse in 2024 in a renovated, more than 100-year-old so-called "wealthy palóc" house.
During the works that began in 2020, we restored the traditionally arranged spaces of the building to meet the needs of today with the help of our architect friends. The smoky kitchen became a bathroom, and the stable became a spacious apartment.
Thanks to the project implemented with the support of the Teleki László Foundation's rural heritage preservation program, the building, which was "modernized" in the 70s, regained its early-century atmosphere inside and out. In 2022, we also won the ICOMOS "House Preserving the Past" award for the renovation.

Why "Szalmavirág"?
Our namesake is the strawflower (in hungarian szalmavirág), commonly known as the golden everlasting (Xerochrysum bracteatum), like straw, retains its shape and color even when dried, which is why it has long been a favorite for decorating interior spaces, especially in the countryside. It is also a popular decoration of country gardens. For us, this flower symbolizes the former charm and value of rural properties, which we would like to make re-experienceable for our guests by revitalizing the house. If you arrive in summer, you can also enjoy the strawflowers in our garden.

CLEANING
Cleaning before and after your stay is part of the basic service. In case of longer stays, we provide bed linen and towels upon request.
